A cake box has one job a plain shipping carton doesn't: it has to keep frosting off its own walls while still letting the customer see what they're buying. This guide covers the plastic dome, base and sizing decisions that determine whether a bakery box protects the cake or ends up smeared before it reaches the counter. Note that the formats below are rigid PET/PP plastic boxes and bowls, not folded paperboard bakery cartons — if your program specifically needs paperboard, say so up front since the sourcing and tooling logic is different.
Box & Bowl Formats
- Round dessert bowls: a small domed lid over a single slice, cupcake or individual pastry — the smallest format in the range.
- Bakery sampler trays: multi-cavity trays for cookie or pastry assortments, holding several pieces separated in fitted wells rather than one large fill.
- Round cake boxes: a taller dome over a round base, sized for small to medium whole cakes.
- Clear cake roll boxes: long rectangular boxes sized for Swiss rolls and similar log-shaped cakes, usually fully clear for maximum shelf visibility.
- Large round cake boxes: a taller dome and reinforced base for celebration-size whole cakes.
- Ridged cake roll boxes: the roll-box format with a ribbed base for extra rigidity under a heavier or moister roll cake.
Dome Height: Matching the Cake, Not Guessing It
Measure the finished cake's actual height including frosting and any topper before choosing a dome, not just the bare cake height. Leave a small margin above the highest point so the dome doesn't press into piped frosting or a topper during normal handling, but not so much headspace that the cake can shift and smear frosting against the inside of the dome during transport. If you're unsure, send us your typical finished-cake dimensions and we'll confirm the closest stock dome height or scope a custom one.
PET Clarity vs. PP Rigidity
| Component | Typical material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dome / lid | Clear PET | Full visibility of the cake is the main selling point at a bakery counter or in a retail case |
| Base | PET or reinforced PP | The base carries the full weight of a wet, heavy cake and needs to resist flex more than the dome does |
Many SKUs pair a clear PET dome with a PP or ribbed-PET base rather than using one material throughout, since the dome's job (clarity) and the base's job (load-bearing rigidity) are different engineering problems. Ask your supplier which base material a given box size actually uses rather than assuming it matches the dome.
Base Rib Strength & Stack Support
Ribbed or ridged bases reduce flex when the base is carrying a wet, heavy cake by one edge — a flat, unribbed base of the same thickness will bow more under the same load. A rim or shoulder step molded into the base also lets boxes rest on top of each other without the weight of an upper box pressing directly onto the lower box's dome.
Sizing Chart
| Format | Typical sizing basis |
|---|---|
| Dessert bowls | Single slice, cupcake or individual pastry portion |
| Sampler trays | Multi-cavity, sized by piece count rather than diameter |
| Round cake boxes | Base diameter, commonly in the 6–10 in range for small to medium cakes |
| Large round cake boxes | Base diameter in the 10–12 in+ range for celebration cakes |
| Cake roll boxes | Length-based, matched to standard vs. jumbo Swiss-roll sizes |
Stacking & Retail Display
Empty boxes ship flat-nested to save cube in the carton, but filled boxes should generally not be stacked directly on top of one another in transport or storage — the dome of a lower box isn't built to carry the weight of another filled box above it. Use case dividers or single-layer trays for filled-box transport rather than assuming the box's own structure handles vertical loading.
Branding & Printing Options
Because the dome and often the base are clear, printing directly across the visible cake area isn't practical — it would hide the product you're trying to showcase. The common branding options are a printed base insert underneath the cake, a printed rim band around the box's shoulder, or a heat-transfer label applied after packing. Ask which option fits your filling-line process, since a rim band typically needs a separate application step.
Quality Checks Worth Doing on Receipt
- Dome seats fully onto the base rim without gapping or needing to be forced.
- Base shows no visible flex or bowing when lifted from one edge, empty.
- Clarity is consistent across the dome — no visible haze or cloudy patches from the molding process.
- Ribs or ridges on the base are uniform and haven't collapsed or warped in transit.
- Boxes nest and de-nest cleanly at packing speed without sticking.
MOQ & Lead Time
Stocked standard sizes can typically ship a trial order from existing cavities. A new dome height, base diameter or ribbed base pattern generally requires new tooling, with MOQs commonly starting around 30,000–100,000 pieces depending on size and complexity, and lead times of roughly 15–30 days after sample approval plus ocean transit.
Compliance
Bakery and cake boxes need the same food-contact documentation as any other plastic packaging: an FDA 21 CFR statement for the resin, migration data if the goods are EU-bound, and batch traceability. See our FDA food-contact compliance guide for the full document checklist to request from any factory.
